Get your information registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and obtain your for-hire interstate operating authority
If you are going to be transporting across state lines as a for-hire (being compensated) carrier then you will need an MC Number. This requirement applies to trucking companies that transport cargo, moving companies that transport household goods, and limo or bus companies that transport passengers for a fee.
When you apply for operating authority your MC Number is issued right away, however, you are automatically put in a ten day waiting period. For trucking companies/owner operators, as long as your application has been submitted correctly, you should expect your authority to be granted within two to four weeks from the date your MC Number is assigned (please note the mention of being "submitted correctly"). For moving companies and passenger carriers, you should normally expect your MC Number to be activated within 30 to 60 days.
